  • Marisa Tomei’s Star Turn as Queen Esther

    by Rebecca Honig Friedman

Marisa Tomei used a Jewish pre-school’s Purim shpiel to get her start in acting. The actor’s mother, Addie Tomei, who runs food tours of New York City, shared the story with us during a visit to the famous Doughnut Plant on New York’s Lower East Side.

    2. My son sent me a high sign about this piece noting that I told him this story many years ago.

The Tomeis at the time lived at 441 ocean prkway on the 6th Floor. O knew they were not Jews let alone orthodox ones. One day I saw David get into the elevator carrying his artwork celebating a Jewish holiday and laughed at the incongruity. It was then his mother Aggie told me why she sent him to the Rebbitzen Katz’’s day school.

If you should have occassion to see or speak to her, aske her if she still has the family photo I took of them in their living room in “tintype” and vintage clothing style.

    3. Sorry! Maris’s mother’s name is Adeline (Addie) not Angie.

    4. Another correction. My wife just reminded me that marisa’s brother’s name was Adam not david.
