I think this is a miugsided initiative. I feel sympathy for ordinary Gazans, but Egypt nor Israel cannot stand idly by and allow Hamas to import Iranian missiles and develop an Islamist / fascist regime. It’s a disaster for peace / stability / prosperity for the whole region.

Mr. Weiss - I am afraid that you have relied, in part, on my words to make a point with which I disagree, namely a criticism of "open Orthodoxy" in general and Rabbi Herzfeld in particular as loosing some kind of moral compass or advocating the covering up of crimes. I don't think that. To the contrary, Rabbi Herzfeld, at our shul, Ohev Shalom Talmud Torah, and in the community does not shrink from rigorous debate, not only on Torah, but also in political affairs. Disagreement about this or that is respected, not discouraged. This is one of the things I love most about this righteous Jew, in addition to his strong moral compass and dedication to Torah Judaism. This rabbi, more than any other human being, has brought me closer to the Torah and in the process the Creator of the Universe. To the extent that I can do good in this world through mitzvot, it is to his merit, please G-d! Let's not get too carried away when we disagree on matters. That's a healthy thing, I think.

[Public] Facebook update:

"clarification of my thoughts on Rabbi Youlus
by Shmuel Herzfeld on Friday, August 26, 2011 at 12:54pm"

https://www.facebook.com/notes/shmuel-herzfeld/clarification-of-my-thoughts-on-rabbi-youlus/256213191067621

"Since my views on the arrest and indictment of Rabbi Youlus have been misunderstood i want to offer a brief clarification for now. (Any misunderstanding of my previosuly stated views is entirely my fault and i apologize for that).
1) Rabbi Youlus is innocent until proven guilty. He is entitled to a vigorous defense.
2)The actual indictment is not even posted yet. So any thoughts about this case are premature (including the thoughts i previously posted). If fraud was committed then that is wrong and sinful and a great embarrasment of God's name.
3) My comments about the prosecutor's case and the NYT article should not be construed as a defense of lying -- God forbid! They were an attempt to highlight an aspect of what i thought might be prosecutorial overreach. Those comments on my part were also premature. My initial reaction was disbelief and deep sadness and i thus offered public comments when i should have waited.
4) Rabbi Youlus and his family are in my prayers. I know him personally and consider him a friend. I also know that he has done many many good things for the Jewish community and he has helped me personally on many occasions (these things do not excuse fraud) so I pray with all my heart that these allegations are false."

Paul - Read the article a little more closely. Rabbi Ralbag says he does not bring Hebrew National into his home because he keeps glatt at home. No one is arguing that Hebrew National is glatt, only that it is not treif.

I take Kashrut seriously and the fact that Rabbi Ralbag will not bring Hebrew National products into his own house says it all for me. Why eat suspect products, especially since we live in a time when there is a vast variety of products available that are truly Kosher by every standard.

I used to work at Mike's Bistro. This thief was taking tips from all the waiters and used it to pay us in the kitchen. Also he deducted taxes on our paychecks but we never got any tax forms by the end of the year. He didn't allowed the waiters to punch in and out on Saturdays and they never got hourly paid on that day. It is sad such talented chief (he is without doubt) has been taken over by profit and money making. Such a low ethical standards even for New York...

No siddur on the market or internet uses inclusive Hebrew language. While admirable to include women's life events around women's reproductive functions, the language remains male with male imagery and language for HaShem. Only in the *translations* are Reform, Conservative, Reconstructionist and Renewal siddurim egalitarian...... so still waiting here.
